SANDY CREEK – Superior snapped a three-game losing streak and topped Sandy Creek by a score of 58-52 on Saturday night. Ethan Roberts’ 17 points and 16 rebound effort meant a lot in the Wildcats getting the victory.
“He’s (Roberts) the world to us. We go as he goes and we tell him that. He’s been on a struggle lately and he really stepped up tonight,” Superior Head Coach Luke Chadwell said. “We’ve been really working hard on doing things the right way and he really did tonight, offensively and defensively.
Both teams traded baskets early, before Sandy Creek Senior Corbin Hansen scored to put the Cougars up 4-2. Roberts answered with a basket of his own and finished with six in the first quarter alone. Junior Tyler Blackistone extended the Wildcat lead to seven with a three pointer from the corner at the 2:03 mark.
Sandy Creek Senior Chandler Souice scored six of his (insert stat line) in the first quarter, but Superior led 13-10.
Blackistone added two more three pointers in the second quarter and Superior led 20-12 with 4:23 left in the quarter. Sandy Creek Junior Gabe Munoz finished a layup and after forcing a turnover that turned into a Jacob Schlick layup to put the Cougars within four.
Senior Corbin Hansen scored a three on a three-rebound possession for the Cougars and trimmed the Superior lead to two heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw plenty of fireworks, as both teams traded leads at a frenzied pace. Souice scored a quick basket to trim the deficit to one, before Senior John Sock scored five of his game-high 18 in the quarter. Munoz made a jump shot and the free throw that trimmed the lead to two midway through the third quarter.
Hansen made another three pointer to put the Cougars up five with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. Snady Creek regained the lead and was up 36-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
Garrett Caldwell, who scored six of his 14 in the fourth quarter, finished two quick shots early in the quarter to put Superior up six with 5:26 remaining. Superior Junior Eric Schiermeyer, who scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter, finished a layup and free throw to extend the Wildcat lead to seven.
Sock finished a layup and a free throw that trimmed the Wildcat lead to four. Schiermeyer made a steal and finished the layup to put Superior up 50-46 with 1:43 remaining.
Caldwell finished a basket and the free throw to put the Wildcats up six with 1:00 remaining, but Sock made a three-pointer the next possession and the lead was down to three.
Superior made two free throws, but Sock once again responded with a three and Superior led by just three with seven seconds remaining. Blackistone made two free throws on the next possession and the Wildcats hung on for the win.
Chadwell hopes this win will propel his team to success for the rest of the season.
“I really hope it skyrockets us. We have a whole week off and don’t play again until Friday,” he said. “We really need a win against a quality opponent and we got one, so hopefully that rights the ship.”
