NELSON — The Lawrence-Nelson girls basketball team won the turnover margin in a convincing fashion, 16 to 4, over Giltner Tuesday night. As a result, the Raiders also won in convincing fashion 64-16.
The Raiders (7-4) have eight seniors on their roster and five of them start. Tuesday night two of them, Cherokee Frahm-Thayer and Kelsey Menke, carried the Raiders offensively with 18 and 12 points, respectively.
With that many seniors, the Raiders certainly don’t lack experience, but head coach Cathy Biltoft would like to see them build more confidence.
“In most cases, (having five starting seniors) is really strong because they have the experience. But they still have a lack of confidence, because they’ve been pushed and shoved, so we’re still working on getting that confidence,” Biltoft said. “Once we figure that out, I don’t think we’ll be able to be stopped.”
The Raiders were effective on both ends from the start, which allowed them to jump out to a quick lead in the first quarter, thanks to eight first quarter points from Menke.
Lawrence-Nelson’s pressure on defense forced six first quarter turnovers alone, as the Raiders kept Giltner scoreless in the first quarter and took a 17-0 lead into the second quarter.
Frahm-Thayer added eight points in the second quarter and Lawrence Nelson took a commanding 34-5 halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same story, as Lawrence-Nelson its already large lead.
The Raiders received eight third-quarter points from Sophomore Mattee Kucera, while Menke added three more in the fourth.
The lopsided score reminded Biltoft of what this group of players endured in losses to Giltner, now 3-7, in previous years.
“That’s what the score looked like four years ago when my girls were freshman (against Giltner),” Biltoft said. “My seniors were freshman and we had low, low numbers. My seniors were like ‘it’s going to happen today.’ ”
